General: Iraqi troops launch offensive to liberate Mosul from Islamic State

Iraqi security forces and Kurdish Peshmerga troops take part in military operations around the northern Iraqi city of Mosul on October 17, 2016, as they seek to root out Islamic State jihadists from the area. 

More than 30,000 federal forces are leading the offensive, backed by air and ground support from a 60-nation U.S.-led coalition, in what is expected to be a long and difficult assault. Read more.
