The 21st of July marks the beginning of the history of independent Kingdom of Belgium and is celebrated there as Belgian National Day ever since 1890. On the 21st of July 1831, Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg swore allegiance to the Belgian constitution and became the first monarch of Belgium, king Leopold I.
Through the almost two centuries that followed, the brave kingdom found itself in the middle of the two largest conflicts of human history - the First and Second World War - and despite the nearly insurmountable challenges set against them, the Belgian armed forces always fought with distinction.
